I’m Eric Martens—a chemical engineer and commercial brewer—and I want to clear up a common myth: not all beer is dehydrating.
If you’re drinking something like a 5% ABV beer, yes, that will dehydrate you.

But there’s a sweet spot—around 2% to 3.5% alcohol—where beer can actually contribute to hydration.
That’s because low-alcohol beers still have a bit of electrolytes and carbohydrates, which your body can use to maintain fluid balance. But here’s the kicker—it’s not just about alcohol content.

Your hydration level, how intoxicated you are, and even heat and sweat all affect how your body handles alcohol. So, it’s not a one-size-fits-all answer.

✅ My advice? If you want to enjoy a beer without compromising hydration, stick to low-ABV options and alternate with water—especially in hot weather.
