There’s a weird split happening in the beer world right now...

On one side, we’ve got this massive surge in non‑alcoholic beers (sales up hundreds of percent over the last decade) and more interest in low‑ABV options like 2–3% “mid‑strength” beers. People are clearly looking for more drinkable, session‑friendly choices that don’t pack a buzz—or skip it entirely.

But at the same time? High‑ABV beers (think 8% and up) are booming too. They now make up a noticeable share of craft beer sales.

So what’s going on here?

It might be that folks want max flavor or more value in a single pour—especially when prices are similar. But that middle zone—the 5–7% range that’s been the backbone of craft beer for years—is starting to get squeezed.

2026 could be a big bounce-back year for beer. Here’s why I’m optimistic.

I’m Eric, a chemical engineer and brewery owner, and I’ve got three trends I’m watching closely this year.

First up: survivor breweries are set to thrive. After two straight years of more closures than openings, the craft beer market is starting to stabilize. That means less competition and a stronger spotlight on quality and experience. If you’ve been doing something well—whether that’s standout styles or a killer taproom vibe—2026 could be your time to shine.

Second, I expect to see a slowdown in THC beverages. These have been taking shelf space from beer, but with new federal regulations set to kick in this November, that space might start to open back up. THC drinks probably aren’t going away, but they’re likely to be more tightly regulated.

And third, I think we’re going to see Gen Z rediscovering the taproom. Yes, they’re drinking less volume, but they’re looking for better experiences and more variety—including non-alcoholic and low-ABV options. After missing out on social milestones during the pandemic, they’re ready to connect IRL—and that’s great news for breweries focused on community.

We’ve all heard the studies: zero drinks is technically healthiest. One or two a week? Still pretty solid. But I think the conversation around alcohol is missing something big—our humanity.

As a brewery owner, I’d never tell someone how much they should drink. Because your relationship with alcohol isn’t just physiological—it’s shaped by your psychology, personal history, culture, even your genetics.

Take the ALDH2 enzyme. It helps break down alcohol in your body, and how efficiently you process it actually changesyour experience of drinking. Some people bounce back fast, others feel wrecked. One of those is more likely to lead to addiction. Wild, right?

But beyond the biochem, there’s the social piece. Sharing a beer with friends, toasting at dinner—those aren’t just habits, they’re rituals of connection. And connection? It’s a health input too.

So yeah, listen to your body—but also be aware that it might be giving you biased signals. And maybe more importantly: check in with your mind.

I’m Eric, owner of Border Brewing Co., right here in the Crossroads, and I’ll be honest — we’ve never had anything quite like this hit KC before.
